Your hard work is in safe hands.
I’ve been proofreading or copyediting one kind of document or another since my junior year of high school, when a teacher in the English department hired me to mark papers for a few of her classes. Just a short while later, I became the first-ever freshman hired to work in the Whittier College Writing Center as a tutor; while there I read essays for professors and colleagues alike. Although most of my experience as an editor has been academic, I’ve also read nonfiction book manuscripts for a general audience, fiction, journalism, literary prose, and more.
I’ve taught writing and introduction to critical theory, and led workshops on feminist histories, feminist consciousness raising, and zine-making. In July 2014 I co-founded the Feminist Library On Wheels (F.L.O.W.) at the Women’s Center for Creative Work in Los Angeles. You can read some of my writing about F.L.O.W. at LitHub, Got a Girl Crush, and the LibraryThing blog. Through F.L.O.W. I ran a short community care project called Books & Bites (I love to cook—feel free to contact me about small event catering or private chef services), and have written several zines.
Over the years I’ve worked as a caregiver, researcher, translator, and personal assistant. I firmly believe in the legitimacy of many forms of knowledge and the value of hidden, marginalized labor. Although I’m happy to help you prepare a manuscript of any kind for publication in a variety of places (or simply for your own personal satisfaction), I’m not interested in forcing you to conform to an arbitrary (and in some cases racist, heterosexist, or classist) set of standards for their own sake. My goal is for you to succeed on your own terms, to preserve the integrity and specialness of your voice and ideas.
I’d love to hear from you today.
When contacting me about your work, please include the following: a general introduction to the piece; where or how you plan to publish it; your deadline, if any; the style guide you’re using, if any; and whether you have specific questions you’d like answered or writing advice you need.
My rates will depend on the stage you’re at in the process, the amount of detail needed in copyediting or proofreading, and how quickly you need the work completed. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch—I’m glad to work with you on a plan that feels sustainable for both of us.
